National Jazz Museum in Harlem

Robin Pogrebin berichtet über das National Jazz Museum in Harlem, das in drei Jahren in neue Räumlichkeiten ziehen soll, "eine neue, über 900 Quadratmeter große Heimat im früheren Mart 125 gegenüber des Apollo Theater auf der 125sten Straße" (New York Times). Pogrebin erklärt, das Museum sei zwar noch klein, habe aber einige Vorteile, zum Beispiel, dass es an die Smithsonian Institution angegliedert sei, sowie dass es einige wichtige Aufnahmen wie etwa die renommierte Savory Collection besitze. Er spricht mit dem künstlerischen Leiter des Museums, dem Saxophonisten Loren Schoenberg, sowie mit dem Pianisten Jonathan Batiste, der in einem Programm mit dem Titel "Jazz Is: Now!" regelmäßig am Museum unterrichtet und spielt.

Pogrebin points out that the museum is yet small yet has several advantages, among them being an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and owning some landmark recordings such as the prestigious Savory Collection. He talks to the museum's artistic director, the saxophonist Loren Schoenberg, as well as to the pianist Jonathan Batiste who plays and gives regular classes about jazz at the museum in a program called "Jazz Is: Now!"
