Herman Leonard

John Edward Hasse erinnert sich an den Fotografen Herman Leonard, der am 14. August im Alter von 87 Jahren verstarb (Wall Street Journal). Leonard "gewann das Vertrauen von Instrumentalisten und Sängern – sogar das des notorisch aufbrausenden Miles Davis", schreibt Hasse, "und belohnte diese Nähe mit Bildern, die vor Wahrheit und Schönheit zu leuchten schienen". Hasse folgt Leonards "improvisiertem Leben", hält bei einigen der Fotos an, die wahrscheinlich jeder Jazzfan kennt; er schreibt über die kommerzielle Fotografie, mit der Leonard sich seinen Lebensunterhalt verdiente, und über das Comeback seiner Jazzfotos in den 1980er Jahren. Leonard war 1991 nach New Orleans gezogen und verlor während des Hurricane Katrina 8.000 Abzüge und die Aufzeichnungen über seine Negative. Hasse ist der Musikkurator des Smithsonian National Museum of American History und traf Leonard nur eine Woche vor seinem Tod, als der Fotograf ihm neue Abzüge seiner Bilder zeigte, die später in diesem Jahr in einer "very limited edition" veröffentlicht werden sollen.

Leonard "won the trust of instrumentalists and singers – even the notoriously irascible Miles Davis", writes Hasse, "and rewarded that intimacy with images luminous with truth and beauty". Hasse then follows Leonard's "improvised life", stops at some of the memorable photos every jazz fan knows, writes about commercial photography which paid for Leonard's living and about the comeback of his jazz photos in the 1980s. Leonard had moved to New Orleans in 1991, and he lost 8,000 prints and his exposure records during Hurricane Katrina. Hasse is the music curator of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History and he met Leonard only a week before his death at which time the photographer showed him new prints of his images to be issued in a "very limited edition" later this year.
